ZECHARIAH (an exhortation)

People of God!  As this is my appointed day to serve the Lord,  I will bring...(holding up bowl) fresh incense into the Temple for the morning sacrifice.

(ZECHARIAH enters the Temple between the two columns.  As he enters the ANGEL GABRIEL enters from upper stage left and crosses to above and stage left of the columns.  ZECHARIAH starts to crosse to ANGEL GABRIEL, but stops.  ZECHARIAH is shocked and full of fear)

ZECHARIAH (cont'd)

Who are you?  What are you doing here?  How did you get into the Temple?  (pointing to the columns) The doors were locked all night!

ANGEL GABRIEL

Do not be afraid, Zechariah.  Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to give him the name John.  He will be a joy and delight to you.  Many will rejoice because of his birth, for he will be great in the sight of the Lord.  He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from birth.  Many of the people of Israel will he bring back to the Lord their God.  And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

ZECHARIAH

How can I be sure of this? I am on old man and my wife is well along in years.

ANGEL GABRIEL

I am Gabriel.  I stand in the presence of the Lord, and I've been sent to speak with you and to tell you this good news.  But now you will be silent and not be able to speak until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their proper time.

AMOS

What's happening in the Temple?  It shouldn't take this long.

SIMON

The priest brought the incense for the sacrifice, but he should be done by now.

(ZECHARIAH turns toward the columns as ANGEL GABRIEL crosses upstage and exits upstage stage left.  ZECHARIAH passes through the columns)

AMOS

There he is.

(ZECHARIAH stops as he crosses downstage of the columns and motions toward the columns and then with both hands to his mouth)

AMOS

What's happening?  He pointing into the Temple and to his mouth.

(ZECHARIAH waves his arms up and down in frustration.  He points to his mouth with both hands)

SIMON  (pointing to ZECHARIAH)

He can't speak.   He must have seen a vision.

AMOS

In the Temple?

SIMON

Must have.

AMOS

What was it?  Something good, something bad?  He and his wife are old.  What could it be about?

SIMON

He looks very upset.  Let's help him home.

[Spot #1 widen to cover SIMON and AMOS as they enter the stage]

Synopsis:

WHO ARE YOU?

The Bible is filled with important individuals, known by whom they are and what they say.  Yet there are several asked “Who are you?” whose identity has extraordinary consequences for all mankind.  The first collection contains three short plays concerning Angel Gabriel.  In each play that consists of Angel Gabriel's visitations to Zechariah, Mary, and Joseph, the reaction to the Angel's sudden and unexpected appearance produces three different responses—responses that could relate to our own response to miracles in our own lives.  How would we respond?  Again with this second collection, the plays, each only three to five-minute running time, could be produced together or separately—introduced easily into a church service or Bible study.

In the second collection of the series, Jesus is encountered in five situations where “Who are you?” is addressed about him. Each of these plays are less than five minutes and produced separately for a series of sermons or Bible studies or in one larger production.

In the third collection of my series WHO ARE YOU? the life and mission of John the Baptist is dramatized in four short plays suitable for one complete production or four short productions each of five minutes.
